Reading and Phonics at Pitsford
As a school we have adopted Read Write Inc. phonics reading and writing teaching methods. All members of the Foundation Stage and Key Stage One staff (Reception to Year 2) have received the full training and daily phonics sessions take place in Class One and as necessary in Class Two.
In addition to this, the methods learnt through the Read Write Inc. training are applied with groups of older children who are still developing their reading skills.
Further information on the Read Write Inc. phonics approach can be found on their website. Click below to find out more.
We do not adhere to any one 'Reading Scheme' to encourage children to develop their reading skills, although we draw a structure from the Oxford Reading Tree and supplement this with books from Collins. Instead, we draw upon a wide range of reading books. We believe strongly that children who are enjoying their reading will develop more quickly and as such feel it is vital that we provide as wide a range of stimulus books as possible. We encourage parents to help their children find books they will enjoy and want to share rather than become concerned about what 'colour' book they are on.
Recently, we provided our Class 3 children with a budget of £500 and sent them off to Waterstones. They spent every penny!
To further engender a love of reading we celebrate World Book Day with the children each year, and take the opportunity to share the books that we all enjoy. We regularly hold a reading with parents afternoon at the school, and the PSA (Parents and School Association) provided cookies and hot chocolate to help make it a really magical day.
We invite members of our community to join us as volunteer readers to support reading in the school. Please contact the school office if you are interested in getting involved in this.
In 2017 our staff will be trained in Talk for Reading strategies, this will not only help raise standards in reading but will also complement our existing Talk for Writing approach to the teaching of writing skills.
